College athletes: Bates is WAC champ in 3,000 for Boise State

Emma Bates, Boise State sophomore runner from Elk River, was  Mountain West Conference indoor champion in the 3,000 meters with 9:47.51 on Feb. 25 at Albuquerque, N.M. on Feb. 25 Bates also placed fifth in the 5,000 meters with 16:44.06, leading the xxx-place Broncos with 14 points.

Heather Brunn

Heather Brunn, Minnesota Gophers junior half-miler from Rogers, earned her first Big Ten placement on Feb. 25 at the conference indoor meet when she placed eighth with  2:11.71 at Nebraska. Her personal best 2:11.23 at the Iowa State Classic on Feb. 10 leads the team.

Morgan Lynch

Morgan Lynch, University of North Dakota sophomore swimmer from Elk River, set three team freestyle records at the Western Athletic Conference meet Feb. 24-25 in San Antonio, Texas, with 17:14.48 in the 1650 (placing eighth), 4:57.11 i the 500 (placing 10th), and 10:19.91 in the 1000. She also has the fourth-best UMD time in the 200 with  1:52.90.

R.J. Dean

R.J. Dean, Northland College (Ashland, WI) freshman guard from Rogers, was named Upper Midwest Athletic Conference freshman of the year, after  scoring 11.2 points per game and placing second in the conference with .452 accuracy on 3-pointers. Northland finished 5-20.

Maria Loughlin

Maria Loughlin, Anoka-Ramsey freshman guard from Rogers, is leading the 25-3 team with 15.3 points per game, including 59 three-point shots,.
