Baseball: Elk River town team moved up to Class B

by Bruce Strand, Sports editor

Elk River’s town baseball team, the Pioneers, has been moved up to Class B, much to the chagrin of manager Ken Ott.

The Pioneers have been struggling  mightily even in Class C, but they were moved up along with fellow North Star League members Rogers, Albertville and St. Michael, into a Class B region with Blaine, Coon Rapids and Esst Bethel.

“We all fought it, at the January meeting, but the state board’s minds were already made up,” said Ott.  “They want more teams in Class B and they moved 11 Class C teams up.”

But there’s  one upside to the move: “In Class B, we’ll be able to sign players from a radius of 30 miles. Before, we could only have Elk River residents, and last year Zimmerman, too.”

Ott asks that player interested in joining call him at 763-441-5688.
