Elk River finishes 1 and 2 at tourney

Elk River Green and Elk River Red took first and second, respectively, in their division of Special Olympics at an Area 7 tournament held this past Sunday at Rogers High School.

Elk River Red won big in its first game, according to some of the more animated players. “We creamed them,” he stated.

But Elk River Red lost to the eventual championship team — Elk River Green, which pitted coaches and brothers Thomas and Adam Kihle against one another.

There were about 70 local athletes at the tournament, including teams for full court, half-court and individual skills.

Area 7 goes west to St. Cloud and Rocori and north to Mora, Cambridge and North Branch.

Audie Gutzwiller and Colene Verdick are the co-heads of the Elk River delegation of Special Olympics.
