Basketball: Elk boys fall in OT to Pirates 80-73; fourth straight loss
by Bruce Strand, Sports editor
Elk River dropped its fourth straight game, and second overtime loss in that skid, to Park Center 80-73 on Friday evening in Brooklyn Park.
It was a tumultous game. Park Center’s coach was ejected during the second half for berating referees. Pirate fans were throwing change unto the floor, and a fight broke out in the stands, prompting police to be called in to restore order. A Pirate player was briefly unconscious after hitting the floor in a collision with an Elk player trying to draw a charging foul.
Elk River’s Clay Elrod sank a 3-pointer with :30 left for a 64-62 lead, but Quinton Hooker tied the score with a jump shot with :15 remaining, forcing overtime.
The Pirates prevailed in what became a free throw contest, making 25 of 34 while the Elks had 44 chances but made only 27.
Hooker, a junior guard, scored 32 points for the Pirates (10-5 conference, 15-6 overall), including 11-for-13 on free shots Sophomore guard Isaiah McKay added 25, going 8-for-8 at the line.
Elrod logged 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Elks (10-6 conference, 12-10 overall), while Porter Morrell sank 16 points and Tucker Morrell 16.
The Elks will host Andover on Tuesday.
