Sheriff Joel Brott has closed Big Lake and Mitchell Lake, located within the city of Big Lake, to cars, trucks and SUV’s effective Thursday Feb. 16.
This year, two ATV’s have broken through the ice on area lakes. During the early evening hours on Feb. 12 an SUV broke through the ice on Big Lake. The rear portion of the vehicle broke through and became partially submerged. All three occupants crawled from open windows of the SUV onto the ice surface. Minutes later the vehicle broke completely through and fell to the bottom of the lake in 25 feet of water. No one was injured.
The ice was only 7 inches thick where the SUV broke through. Only yards away, the ice is a foot thick. Due to these increasingly unpredictable ice conditions, the use of cars, trucks and SUV’s on Big Lake and Lake Mitchell in the city of Big Lake are prohibited. Access points to Big Lake and Lake Mitchell will remain closed until further notice.
Recreational vehicles such as snowmobiles and ATV’s will be allowed on Big Lake and Lake Mitchell. People walking, fishing and operating snowmobiles and ATV’s on these lakes should use extreme caution due to thin ice.
