Basketball: Rogers girls tip Magic in overtime 54-50

The Rogers Royal squeezed past Monticello 54-50 in overtime on Friday evening, snapping a four-game losing streak.

Emily Reichert and Jordyn Motter sank 14 points each for for the Royals (4-5 conference, 10-12 overall). Courtney McClay added 9 points and Lindsay Dorr 8.

Reichert’s 3-point shot gave the Royals a 50-48 lead in the overtime. Dorr gave the Royals their final 54-50 edge on a layup off a nice feed from Motter.

Monticello’s Grace Sawatzke netted 14 points including a last-second bank shot from the free throw line that tied the game 45-45 and forced overtime.  Morgan Lindenfelser added 13 for the Magic (3-7 conference,  10-11 overall)

“Our girls put together a nice performance and bounced back from a tough stretch of games,” said coach Jeremy Digiovanni. “They showed a lot of resilency after going down by 10 early to fight their way back into the game in the first half and then make the big plays when we needed them most to get a tough win against a good team on their court.”

The Royals trailed 14-4 early but outscored the Magic 9-5 in overtime and beat them for the second time.

The Royals sank 18 of 27 free shots, a big factor as Monticello w as just 5-for-14.

Rogers will host Buffalo on Thursday.
