Elk River hockey head coach Tony Sarsland has resigned from longtime post

Tony Sarsland, the longtime boys’ hockey coach at Elk River High School, resigned this morning effective immediately.

Sarsland’s sudden departure comes as he is the subject of an investigation by the school district, according to Casey Mahon, the school district’s manager of communications.

Sarsland has been placed on paid administrative leave from his duties as social studies teacher at VandenBerge Middle School pending completion of an investigation, Mahon said.

Sarsland’s resignation was a short single sentence statement or email  that he was resigning immediately, Mahon told the Star News.

Ben Gustafson has been named the interim coach.

Mahon said players have been spoken with and there are no reports of student misconduct.

The Elk’s next game is Saturday at home vs. Maple Grove.
