In four seasons of Mississippi 8 play,  Zimmerman never beat perennial champion Buffalo, but the Thunder finally toppled the Bison on Thursday evening, 62-57, in a non-conference duel.

“This is a huge win for us,” said coach Ben Kvidt. “They had won nine in a row, too. And playing at their place is ever easy.”
Jake Wilson scored 15 points, and Caleb Lunning and Nate Christensen 12 each, as the Thunder (16-4) prevailed with sharp shooting and alert play on both ends of the court.

“We passed the ball really well and played good team defense,” said Kvidt. “If somebody got beat (on defense) another guy would back him up.”

The Thunder shot 51 percent overall from the field (20-for-39), 50 percent on 3-pointers (6-for-12) and 80 percent at the line (16-for-20).

Two free shots each by Lunning and Christensen sealed the win.

Dominic Gilmer netted 17 for Buffalo (14-7), and Caleb Ruter and Ethan Freer added 10 each.

Zimmerman was 0-8 against Buffalo in the Mississippi 8 and moved to the Granite Ridge Conference this year.

Gavin Doppler scored 8 points, Kyle Connelly and Ethan Lunning 6 each, and Corey Foyt 4 points along with 3 steals and 5 assists.

The Thunder will play at Princeton on Friday evening.
