Basketball: Elk boys clip Coon Rapids 74-62

Three days after losing a key conference game, the Elk River Elks regrouped with a 74-62 victory over Coon Rapids there on Tuesday evening.

Sophomore center Clay Elrod sank 22 points, shooting 9-for-15, and junior guard Porter Morrell had a hot hand with 19 points on 4-for-5 shooting from the floor and 10-for-12 at the line.

The Elks had lost to No. 6 ranked Osseo 67-62 Monday with a chance to tie for the lead with an upset win.

“Tonight it was nice to see us come back from a tough loss,” said coach Randy Klasen. “Our kids took the Osseo game pretty hard. But we were able to go on the road and get a nice win at Coon Rapids.”

Senior guard Ryan Ness aded 12 points as the Elks improved to 12-6 overall and 10-3 in the NWSC.

Adam Al-Hammad led Coon Rapids (2-10, 5-13) with 20 points.

The Elks will host a ranked team for the second straight Monday night when No. 7 Eden Prairie (13-4) comes to town for a non-conference game.
