Hockey: Rogers boys hand STMA first conference loss 7-2

Andrew Smith scored twice in the first three minutes, launching first-place Rogers on a 7-2 conquest of St. Michael-Albertville at home Tuesday evening.

Rogers posted its 19th straight Mississippi 8 win. The Royals are 6-0 in conference and handed the Knights (3-1 conference, 11-7 overall) their first conference loss.

Smith, senior forward, scored on a spin move just 17 seconds after faceoff, and got another with a slap shot at 2:35. The first period ended 2-0.

In the second, Rogers’ Brandon Spah and STMA’s David Anderson traded goals. after which the Royals started to break it open with two goals on a five-minute power play from a checking-from-behind penalty. Neal Smith scored 5-on-3 and Travis Brown 5-on-4 goal, making it 5-1.

Brian Jungles ad Neal Smith added goals in the third period as Rogers pumped in seven goals in 28 shots againstĀ  STMA goalie Andrew Semo.

Neal Smith, Jungles and Zach Hnath made two assists each. Robby Vukelich made 21 saves while giving up goals to David Anderson and Chris Coquyt.

Rogers will host Buffalo on Thursday.
