Caleb Lunning sank four free shots in the final minute and the Zimmerman Thunder pulled out a 63-62 win over Coon Rapids at home on Saturday afternoon.
Jake Wilson led with 21 points as the Thunder (13-4) prevailed in their first-ever matchup with the Cardinals (5-11), a Northwest Suburban Conference team.
Lunning had just three points before twice going to the line with 45 seconds and 20 seconds left and giving his team a one-point lead each time, finishing with seven points.
Coon Rapids missed three shots in the time remaining as the Thunder held on.
Wilson had 16 first-half points including a dunk when he sliced through two Cardinal defenders near the hoop, and the Thunder led 38-34 at the break.
Nate Christensen tallied 13 points and Kyle Connelly 11 for the Thunder.
Pierre Roddy dropped in 15 for Coon Rapids, with Deaunte Hammer and Joe Churilla netted 11 each.
Zimmerman is currently one of three teams with one loss in the Granite Ridge Conference play. St. Cloud Cathedral is 7-1, and Little Falls and Zimmerman are 5-1.
The next Thunder game is at Little Falls on Friday. The Flyers are the only GRC team that beat them in the first round.
