I would like to express my thanks to the Elk River School Board and staff members of VandenBerge Middle School for recognizing my daughter, Madelyne Sorenson, at the most recent meeting of the Elk River School Board. Maddy was recognized, along with another young man from Rogers Middle School, for musical achievements within and outside of District 728 music programs. It is gratifying to see the efforts of students recognized in this way, and I believe it serves as a reminder of the importance music and arts education. Numerous studies support the study of music and the arts as leading to improved test scores and improved learning across all subjects. Honoring music students in this way can only have a positive impact on these programs.
Students don’t learn alone, of course, and I am very grateful for the terrific teachers and staff at VandenBerge. Both of Maddy’s music teachers, Terry Beaudry and Sara Klingelhoffer, took the time to attend the meeting in the evening, and Principal Marcia Welch made a beautiful presentation. I would like to personally thank them for their support, as well as the school board and Superintendent Mark Bezek for the recognition given both of these students. Your work is most appreciated. — Dean Sorenson, Elk River
