Elk River seeks grant for solar trash containers

Elk River is seeking a grant to help pay for solar garbage and recycling containers.
The units would be put out at several city parks and ball fields.
Total cost for 10 stations is $64,200. The city is applying for a $48,150 grant from Sherburne County SCORE funds to cover 75 percent of the cost.
The BigBelly trash units use a solar-powered compacting system that holds five times the waste of a conventional system, according to Elk River Environmental Administrator Rebecca Haug.
The units also allow park supervisors to monitor when the containers need to be emptied through an on-line management system.
