Hockey: Saints, Royal boys deadlock 3-3

St. Francis earned a surprising 3-3 tie with the Rogers Royals on Tuesday evening, boosted by two goals from Zach Foesch.

Rogers (11-5-1) had 34 shots, same as the Saints (5-11), and went 0-for-6 on power plays while the Saints were 2-for-9.

Foesch hit a power-play goal just 2:09 after the faceoff. Nate Weber tied it for Rogers a minute later (Neal Smith assisting) and Spencer Marchand put the ahead at 16:34 (Andrew Smith and Kyle Korva assisting).

After a scoreless second period, Foesch nailed another power play goal :41 into the third period, tying the score 2-2.

Bryan Jungles struck for Rogers, shorthanded, at 2:06 (assists by Brandon Spah and Zach Hnath) for a 3-2 lead. St. Frances pulled back even on Olli-Pekka Virtanen’s goal at 11:45.

Rogers held on during the eight-minute overtime despite five penalties including a five-minute major on Matt Weber. Nate Weber got a game misconduct as the game ended.

Each goalie, Keaton Mumm for Rogers and Darion Hanson for St. Francis, stopped 31 of 34 shots.

Rogers will will host Cambridge-Isanti at home Saturday, 3 p.m.
