Porter Morrell poured in 24 points as underclassmen led Elk River to a 61-58 victory over Champlin Park in a duel of NWSC contenders Tuesday evening.
Morrell, junior guard averaging 11.3 points, shot 7-for-13, including 3-for-6 on 3-pointers, and 7-for-9 at the line, in posting a career high. He also dealt out six assists and snagged five rebounds.
Sophomore post Clay Elrod, the season scoring leader with 16.5 ppg, notched 11 points and five rebounds.
Junior 6-4 forward Bryan Edwards, off the bench, logged 11 points and 11 rebounds while blocking three shots. He led the Elks to a 24-20 rebound edge.
Senior guard Ryan Ness added 12 for the Elks, who led 38-20 at halftime, but had to scramble at the end as Rebels revved up for 48 points in the second half.
Ian Smith tallied 19 points, Trevor Garrison 13, Zach Johnson 12 and J.T. Gibson 10 for the Rebels.
Elk River made 18 of 23 free shots and Champlin Park 11 of 15.
The Elks are now 6-2 in the NWSC and 8-5 overall. This was just the second conference loss for Champlin Park (6-2, 9-4). The Elks, Rebels and Centennial are all 6-2, trailing Osseo (7-1).
The Elks will host Maple Grove on Friday.
