Wrestling: Rogers wins St. Croix Invite; it’s first-ever tourney victory
The Rogers Royal wrestlers nabbed the first tournament championship in their program’s history on Saturday, racking up five individual titles in placing first among 10 teams at the St. Croix Lutheran Crusader Invitational.
“Going into the tournament, we knew we could place in the top three,” said coach Chris Donnay, “but to win the whole thing took all 12 guys.”
Kyler Swanson was named Most Valuable Wrestler in the tournament, winning the 138-pound title with an overtime decision in the finals, after getting a fall and decision to advance.
Phillip Anderson had three falls to take the 126-pound title. Ryan Lien had a bye and two pins for the 195-pound crown. Clay LeVasseur had a bye ad two pins to nab the 220-pound trophy. Connor Larson won at 120 with a bye, a fall and a major.
Rogers totaled 203 points with host St. Croix Lutheran next at 158.
The Royals were 6-3 with six falls in the first round.
“From there we just kept going,” said Donnay. “Every other tournament this year we’ve had one bad round, but not this time.”
Rogers had seven in the finals with Kyle Ysterboe at 113 (2-1, one fall) and Michael Voorhees (2-1, two falls) each runners-up.
“Five champions in one tournament and seven in the finals, you can’t ask for much more then that,” said Donnay. “Everyone wrestled great today. Owens and Lemcke, both first year guys, had great tournaments.”
Jake Owens took third at 140 (3-1, two falls, triple-OT win). Placing fourth were Tim Beach at 130 and Jordan Lemcke at 170. Placing sixth were Tyler Eicher at 152 and Peder Oakland at 285.
The tournament victory was a nice boost after a humbling 74-0 loss on Friday night against St. Michael-Albertville, ranked No. 2 in Class AAA.
Rogers (5-7) will wrestle Buffalo and Mound-Westonka on Thursday at Buffalo.
