Elk River-Zimmerman took a quick 3-0 lead and held on to defeat Grand Rapids-Coleraine 3-2 on Friday evening in Grand Rapids.
Jonna Curtis scored just 42 seconds after faceoff, and again at 10:34, with assists from Chelsey Petrich and Madison Ellis, respectively.
Abby Kratzke made it 3-0 with her shot at 14:07 assisted by Emily Heid.
GRC got on the board at 16:28 of the first with Molly Illkainen scoring on a power play. The Elks stayed up 3-1 until Illkainen struck again at 5:54 of the third.
The Elks permitted just 10 shots on goal with Tori Herrmann in the nets. Sydney Helmbrecht stopped 18 of 21 for GRC.
Curtis now has 30 goals this year and 144 in her career, 12 behind the Elk record held by Jessica Pullar. Kratzke got her sixth goal.
ERZ has beaten two Section 7AA rivals, the other being Cloquet-Esko-Cartlon 2-0. The defending section champs will make one more trip north to play Duluth’s combined team next Friday.
The Elks are 15-3-1 and GRC is 10-6-2.
