A rebound goal by Abby Kratzke sparked Elk River-Zimmerman in a 4-1 victory over Coon Rapids at home on Tuesday evening.
The Elks led 2-0 after one period. Coon Rapids pulled within 2-1 on Jane Hanula’s goal at 2:35 of the second period. Cardinal goalie Ali Weber then withstood heavy pressure from the Elks for 13 minutes to keep her team close.
But Kratzke, a senior forward, drilled the puck above Weber’s shoulder while darting down the middle of the ice just as the goalie knocked away a shot by Jonna Curtis, at 15:49 of the period.
Up 3-1, the Elks held tight in the third period with Tori Herrmann making 12 of her 24 saves. Cassey Petrich made it 4-1 with an open-net, power-play goal with 40 seconds left.
Jonna Curtis drilled her 28th goal of the season just 39 seconds into the first period, assisted by Cassey Petrich. Kaylee Forster followed quickly with a goal at 2:35, assisted by Kratzke and Josie Brown.
Curtis and Jordan McLaughlin had assists on the Kratzke goal.
The No. 7 ranked Elks are 10-2 in conference, trailing Anoka, which has one loss, and 14-3-1 overall.
Weber made 25 saves for Coon Rapids, now 3-8 in conference and 5-13 overall.
ERZ travels to Grand Rapids-Greenway on Friday evening.
