An Elk River company’s plans for expansion are moving closer to being accomplished.
Crystal Distribution Inc. (CDI) has proposed expanding its facility in the Northstar Business Park by 30,000 square feet. To do so, the company needs part of an adjacent city-owned lot.
The Elk River Economic Development Authority (EDA) voted unanimously Jan. 9 to move forward with splitting the city-owned lot to facilitate CDI’s expansion. The EDA also agreed to begin negotiating with CDI to sell the company the portion of the lot it needs to expand.
The city-owned lot is 12 acres in size. Splitting it would result in 5 acres for CDI’s expansion and 7 acres to market for light industrial purposes, according to Elk River Director of Economic Development Annie Deckert.
CDI has been located in Elk River since 2005, when it built its current 30,000-square-foot building at 17560 Tyler St. The company is owned and managed by Pat O’Brien and his wife, Bobbie Jo and employs more than 100 full-time staff.

The Northstar Business Park is located along Twin Lakes Parkway, south of the Wal-Mart and Home Depot development.
