Basketball: Elk boys nip Andover 70-69 as race tightens

Elk River barely defeated a last-place, winless Andover team 70-69 on Tuesday evening, but the  harrowing victory left them close to the conference lead that tightened up considerably.

Clay Elrod, 6-5 sophomore center, powered the Elks with 25 points and 15 rebounds, shooting 10-for-22. He made two free shots on a 1-and-1 with 17 seconds left for the winning margin.

The Elks are now one of four NWSC teams with one loss, after two co-leaders absorbed their first conference setback on Tuesday night. Osseo lost to Champlin Park 54-53 and Maple Grove lost to Centennial 76-60. No. 3 ranked Osseo is 6-1, with Champlin Park, Maple Grove and the Elks all 5-1.

Ryan Ness added 14 points and Peter Morrell 10 for the Elks (7-4 overall), who were frigid on 3-pointers (2-for-16) but torrid at the free throw line (20-for-23). Ness was 8-for-8 on freebies.

Andover (0-9) was buoyed by eight 3-pointers in 22 attempts. The Huskies were led by Kyle Kettler with 15 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Connor Wilke scored 14 points.

The Elks will host Park Center on Thursday.
