Alicia Nelson delivered the decisive goal as the Rogers Royals toppled the Orono Spartans 2-1 at home Friday evening, their second win over a ranked team this season.
Orono (13-2) peppered the Rogers net with 48 shots but just one got past freshman goalie Michelle Klimstra. Rogers had 30 shots with Orono’s Casey Hartfiel stopping 28.
Rogers (10-5-2), ranked No. 10 by Let’s Play Hockey, has now beaten No. 7 Orono and No. 5 Mound-Westonka.
The Royals bounced back from a 3-2 loss to Cambridge-Isanti on Thursday that dropped them to 1-3 in the Mississippi 8.
The first 31 minutes were scoreless before Madison Lehn delivered a goal for Rogers at 14:09 of the second period, assisted by Kassie Scherling.
Orono’s Ellie Martin knotted the score at 6:20 of the third period, but the tie was short-lived as Nelson scored at 9:15, with Marissa Soppeland and Emily Antony assisting.
It was Nelson’s eighth goal of the season and Lehn’s seventh. Each team has a scorer with 19 goals — Rogers’ Antony, and Orono’s Becky Smith.
The Royals will host Princeton on Tuesday.
