Hockey: Royal boys fall to St. Louis Park in OT, 6-5

The Rogers Royals couldn’t hold a two-goal lead  and wound up losing to St. Louis Park 6-5 in overtime Tuesday on the Orioles ice.

Rogers (6-5) had a 4-2 lead after two  periods, and a 39-25 shot advantage in the game, but the Orioles (7-2-1) scrambled back and won on Nick Gaitan-Gaitan’s goal 16:03 into the extra session.

Tyler Brodersen had the hat trick for the Orioles. Zach Hnath notched two goals for the Royals.

Neal Smith scored in the first period for Rogers, as did Tyler Brodersen for SLP.

In the second period,  Andrew Smith, Hnath and Caleb LeClaire scored  for Rogers and Josh Passolt got one back for the Orioles.

The hosts stormed ahead 5-4 with three goals in the first 5:44 of the third period, two by Brodersen and one by Alec Baer.

Hnath pulled the Royals even with a goal at 6:28. There would be no more scoring for the next 27 minutes and Gaitan-Gaitan settled the issue with 57 seconds left in the OT,  assisted by Brodersen.

In the nets, Robby Vukelich stopped 19 of 25 for Rogers, and Ryan Froom 34 of 39 for SLP.

Each team was 0-for-2 on power plays in a game with few penalties, although each had a checking-from-behind misconduct called.

The Royals play at Cambridge-Isanti on Thursday.
