The Rogers Royals are 2-0, so far, against the Elk River Elks in the 2011-12 boys basketball season.
Led by Michael Schreiber with 26 points, the Royals held off the Elks 61-55 in the fifth-place game at the Tartan Holiday Tournament on Friday in Oakdale.
Rogers had beaten the Elks 78-75 in the annual River Battle on Dec. 17 in Rogers.
Normally, that’s the only time the two Highway 101 neighbors meet. But they’ve been playing in the same Tartan tournament for seven years and this is the first time their paths have crossed there.
So the Elks missed a chance for a split on Friday, but might get another shot. This year for the first time, Rogers is also in their section, 8AAAA, having moved up to Class 4A this year.
The 6-foot-8 Schreiber got 15 of his 26 in the second half, including 5-for-5 at the line. He w as 6-for-8 overall.
Rogers (6-4) also had Josh Turnquist with 11 points, including two 3-pointers late in the half that kept them in the lead 28-24, and Austin Barbeln with 11 points, including two 3-pointers late in the game that helped beat back an Elk rally. Garrett Hol was a spark off the bench with five points and six rebounds.
Clay Elrod led Elk River (4-4) with 16 points. The 6-5 sophomore was high-scorer for the Elks in all three games and total 49 points. He was named to the all-tournament team. Ryan Ness scored 14 points and Porter Morrell 11.
Both teams resume conference play next week with the Elks at Anoka on Tuesday evening and the Royals at Becker on Friday evening.
