Generating two goals in the last nine minutes, Elk River-Zimmerman shook off Bloomington Kennedy 2-0 on Thursday at the St. Louis Park Invitational.
It was a scoreless battle before Mitchell Kierstad scored 9:02 into the third period, assisted by Garret Aldrich. The Elks nursed a 1-0 lead until Jake Jaremko got an empty-netter with 13 second left, assisted by Aldrich and Kierstad.
The Elks were 0-for-4 while Kennedy (0-7) was 0-for-3 in the power play. The Elks had a 34-27 edge in shots. Anders Franke was in goal for the shutout. Kennedy’s Grant Martens stopped 32 of 33 shots.
The Elks (7-3-1) were playing in the consolation bracket after losing to Maple Grove 3-1 on Wednesday. The Elks will play for fifth place on Friday against Eden Prairie (6-1-2), whom they tied 3-3 at the Edina Holiday Invitational on Dec. 15. The No. 6 ranked Eagles were bumped into the losers bracket when they tied Moorhead 4-4 and lost a shootout for advancement.
