Two weeks later, the Rogers and Elk River boys basketball teams will have a rematch.
After the Royals (5-4) and Elks (4-3) won consolation-round games at the Tartan Invitational on Thursday, putting them in the fifth-place game at 4:30 p.m. Friday in Oakdale.
Rogers beat the Elks 78-75 on Dec. 17 in the annual River Battle. This has always been a once-a-year event, with the Elks holding a 7-2 edge, but with Rogers winning the last two installments, This year the Elks have a chance to earn a split.
Rogers, in a 63-55 win over Bloomington Kennedy, had four double-digit scorers as Austin Barbeln and Josh Turnquist netted 14 points each, Nick Runge 13 and Michael Schreiber 11. For Kennedy (1-5), Sam Willis hit 16 points and Rice Gunn 13.
Elk River topped Monticello 63-53, powered by 6-5 sophomore forward Clay Elrod with 22 points. Ryan Ness added 14. Keeping Monticello (0-7) in the game was guard Sam Taufen with 28 points.
