Hockey: Rogers boys clip Mounds View 3-2 for Schwann Bronze crown
The Rogers Royals scrambled from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Mounds View 3-2 in the championship game of the Schwann Cup Bronze Division tournament on Wednesday.
Playing the finals at the Xcel Center after winning twice in the Blaine Super Rink, the Royals (6-4) won this tournament for the second time, the other coming in Bronze in 2010. Last year, the Royals were bumped up to Silver and went 0-3.
The Mustangs (4-5) took a 2-0 lead on second-period goals by A.J. Rupert and Jacob Tretvsen.
Rogers sophomore Nate Weber got one back before the period ended, assisted by Neal Smith.
Bryan Jungles knotted the score 6:44 into the third period with a goal assisted by Spencer Marchand and Brandon Spah. Just 33 seconds later, Neal Smith got the go-ahead goal, assisted by Andrew Smith.
Robby Vukelich stopped 35 of 37 shots for the Royals in the evenly-played game. For the Mustangs, Brandon Smith stopped 35 of 38.
Next for Rogers is a game at St. Louis Park on Tuesday, 7 p.m.
