One soft goal in the second period was the difference as No. 10 ranked Mounds View scrapped for a 1-0 win over No. 7 Elk River-Zimmerman on Wednesday evening.
The Centennial Holiday Tournament semifinal match was evenly-fought with the Elks (10-2-1) launching 27 shots and the Mustangs (11-2) launching 25.
Kathryn Larson notched the lone goal on a blooper that got past Elk goalie Tori Herrmann in the second period. Hermann stopped 24 of 25, and MV’s Mary Dingman repelled all 27 Elk shots.
The Mustangs put the clamps on Elk senior Jonna Curtis, who has 23 goals this year and tied the Elks’ career scoring record of 248 points on Tuesday in a 3-1 win over Centennial. As many as three Mustangs followed her.
The Elks will duel Moorhead (8-4) for third place at 6 p.m. Thursday in Circle Pines. Mounds View faces White Bear Lake (9-3-1) for the trophy at 8 p.m. White Bear Lake beat Moorhead 5-2.
