Hockey: Royal boys top Cretin 3-1, advance to Schwann Bronze finals

Explosive in the first period two straight days, the Rogers Royals have rolled into the finals of the Schwann Cup hockey tournament, Bronze Division, beating Orono and Cretin-Derham Hall at the Blaine Super Rink.

Rogers (5-4) will duel Mounds View (4-4) in the finals Wednesday, 2:30 p.m., at the Xcel Center in St. Paul.

The Royals beat Orono 6-2  Monday after taking a 3-1 lead in the fist period on goals by Neal Smith, Nate Weber and Bryan Jungles.

Spencer Marchand and David Miller scored in the second period. Zach Hnaath, on a power play, made it 6-2 in the third period. Hnath, Neal Smith, and Andrew Smith all made two assists and Robby Vukelich made 20 saves. Alex Gross and Holder Mohs had the goals for Orono (3-3-1).

In a 3-1 win over Cretin-Derham Hall on Tuesday, the Royals got all their goals  in the first period, by Hnath (power play), Caleb LeClaire and Nate Weber (shorthanded). Getting assists were Neal Smith, Andrew Smith and Travis Brown. The Royals led 3-0 until Jack Stang scored for the Raiders (4-6) with 5:49 left in the game. Vukelich stopped 33 of 34 shots.

Mounds View beat Champlin Park 2-1 in the other semifinal.
Rogers won the Schwann Cup Bronze Division two years ago, got moved up to Silver and went 0-3 last year, and were bumped back to Bronze this year.
