Despite a great start with two short-handed goals in the first period, the Rogers Royals lost to the Little Falls Flyers 5-3 at home Thursday evening.
Joey Hanowski had the hat trick to lead the Flyers (4-6). Neal Smith scored twice for the Royals (3-4).
Zach Hnath at 5:33 and Smith at 11:53 scored on Little Falls power plays in the first period.
Hanowski drilled two goals in the second period and Luke Majerle added another for a 3-2 Flyer lead.
Smith scored again, on the power play, early in the third period for a 3-3 tie, but Little Falls answered with two power-play goals, by Hanowski at 11:17 and Matt Stumpf at 16:32.
The Flyers were 2-for-8 and Royals 1-for-5 on power plays.
Flyer goalie Michael Stumpf stopped 39 of 42 shots, and Royal goalie Keaton Mumm stopped 32 of 37.
Next for Rogers is the Schwann Cup, starting Monday against Orono at noon in Blaine.
