Elk River’s Laura Ryan and her Indiana University teammate Amy Cozad have earned their third national title in synchronized diving.
Ryan and Cozad placed first at the USA Diving Winter Nationals on Monday at Knoxville, TN, clinching a spot on the FINA World Cup team.
They scored 632.70 points on two lists of dives to beat the 2008 Olympic team of Mary Beth Dumnichay and Haley Ishimatsu, who were second with 626.58.
“I’m very excited. We took it one dive at a time and just did what we do in practice,” Ryan said in a report on the USA Diving web site. “We just keep pushing and moving forward.”
Ryan, a sophomore at Indiana, was a state champion for the Elks and won a Big Ten title as a freshman last year.
Cozad and Ryan won this same event plus AT&T Nationals in 2010. With Ryan doing a new back twister, Cozad teamed with Amy Korthauer at the 2011 AT&T Nationals, which they won. Cozad has since learned the back 2 ½ with 1 ½ twists as well, putting her back together with Ryan.
The back twister was their final dive of the competition, and they scored 80.64 points on it to secure the victory.
The FINA World Cup will be held in London, Feb. 20-26.
