Hockey: Royal girls trip No. 5 Mound-Westonka 1-0
The Rogers Royals upsetĀ No. 5 ranked Mound-Westonka 1-0 on Tuesday evening on the White Hawks’ ice.
Kelsey Johnston, senior defender, got the game’s lone goal, 9:41 into the first period, assisted by Emily Antony.
The Royals (7-3-1) permitted only 13 shots on goal in the game with Becca Leshovsky in the nets, while firing 31 shots themselves. Samantha Scobee had 30 saves for M-W (10-2).
“It was a big win for us,” said coach Scott Childers. “We were able to smother them defensively. Mound-Westonka has about six girls who can score and really good goalkeeper. ”
The defensive crew of Johnston, Tori Noland, Leah Benson and Cassie Scherling was solid throughout.
Next for Rogers is the Robbinsdale Armstrong/Cooper tournament starting next Tuesday against Red Wing, 5:15 p.m., at New Hope Arena.
