The Edina Hornets beat Elk River-Zimmerman 4-1 in a game that saw 11 penalties for one skirmish in the second period at Braemar Arena on Friday evening.
In the second round of the Edina holiday tournament, the No. 9 ranked Hornets stormed ahead 3-0 in the first period with a flurry of 18 shots that produced goals by Dylan Malmquist, Connor Hurley and Bo Brauer.
At the 9:53 mark of the second period, roughing penalties were issued to five Elks and five Hornets, with the Elks’ Mitchell Kierstad getting both a slashing and a roughing.
Blake Hallman got the Elks on the board with a power play goal at 15:53 of the second period, assisted by Jared McLaughlin and Jake Jaremko.
Hurley scored again in the third period for Edina (6-1), which had a 45-26 edge in shots.
Elk goalie Anders Franke stopped 41 of 44 shots (one goal was empty-net) and Edina’s Willy Benjamin stopped 25 of 26.
The Elks had 11 penalties and the Hornets 10 in the game. The Elks were 1-for-6 on the power play and Edina 0-for-4.
The Elks (4-2-1), who tied No. 8 ranked Eden Prairie 3-3 on Thursday, will finish the Edina event taking on No. 7 Grand Rapids on Saturday at 6 p.m.
