Hockey: Elk boys tie defending state champ Eden Prairie 3-3

Two goals by Andrew Zerban helped the Elk River-Zimmerman Elks earn a 3-3 tie with No. 8 ranked, defending state champion Eden Prairie on Thursday evening at the Edina Holiday Tournament.

The Elks (4-1-1) took a 2-0 lead in the first period when Garrett Aldrich scored with an assist from Zerban, and Zerban delivered a short-handed goal.

The Elks held their 2-0 lead through two  periods.

Eden Prairie (3-0-1) stormed back in the third period with Luc Snuggerud scoring at 3:42 and Danny Halloran at 11:42.

Zerban, a sophomore forward, regained a 3-2 lead at 14:55, assisted by Ryan Heid. It was Zerban’s sixth goal of the season.

Eden Prairie knotted the score again just 35 seconds later with Andrew Knudsen scoring.

In the overtime, the Eagles managed just three shots on goal and the Elks two, as goalies Derick LaCombe (26-for-29) and Anders Franke (31-for-34), respectively, held firm.

The Elks, ranked No. 14 by Let’s Play Hockey, will face No. 9 Edina at 8:30 p.m. Friday and No. 7 Grand Rapids at 6 p.m. Saturday.
