Hockey: Anoka hands Elk girls first loss 3-1

The Anoka Tornadoes gave up a quick goal to Elk River-Zimmerman’s star, then shut down the Elks the rest of the way and handed them their first loss, 3-1, on Tuesday evening at Elk River Arena.

Jonna Curtis drilled her 16th goal just 1:55 after faceoff, Cassey Petrich assisting, but Katey Burkey knotted the score just 50 seconds later.

Katie Johnson and Blair Parent (power play) gave Anoka a 3-1 lead in the second period and wound up with a 41-23 edge in shots on goal.

Tornado goalie Katie McLain made 40 saves for No. 8 ranked Anoka (9-1) and Tori Hermann had 20 saves for No. 7 ERZ (6-0-1).

In the NWSC, Anoka is 7-1, ERZ 6-1 and Blaine 5-2. Anoka’s loss was against Blaine 3-2.

The Elks will host section rival Cloquet-Esko-Carleton on Friday evening.
