The Rogers wrestlers placed ninth among 13 teams at the Maple Grove Invitational on Saturday with six Royals “placing.”
Coach Chris Donnay noted that 20 of 21 wrestlers on varsity and JV won at least one match in a tournament with a strong field.
“We’re seeing some great things right now that will pay off at the end of the year,” said Donnay.
Phillip Anderson reached the 126 pound finals and placed second with a 3-1 record.
Kyler Swanson (3-1) was third at 145. Placing fourth were Connor Larson (2-2) at 120, Tim Beach (3-2) at 132, and Ryan Lien (2-2) at 220. Michael Voorhees was fifth (3-2) at 152.
The other Royal entrants had 1-2 records –Steffen Paige at 138, Tyler Eicher at 160, and Gabe Martinez at 170.
Swanson won his third-place match with a last-second takedown, 4-3, over Rockford’s Zach Johnson, who’s ranked No. 7 in Class AA and beat Swanson three times last year.
Larson had a good match with No. 4 ranked Ryan Weinmann of Irondale, losing 7-3. Beach, who came out for wrestling a week late, made his debut and got fourth in a division that was “stacked,” said Donnay.
Rogers will host Minneapolis Henry and Spectrum on Thursday beginning 5 p.m.
