Wrestling: Royals lose to Cooper, tie Fridley

The Rogers Royals started their dual meet season at Fridley on Thursday night with a loss to Robinsdale Cooper 39-31 and a tie with Fridley 39-39.

“Both meets were very competitive coming down to the end,” said coach Chris Donnay. “Forfeits at the lower and upper weights hurt us in both matches.”
Against Cooper, Rogers lost only two matches that were wrestled.

Against Fridley, Tim Beach at 132 was down by six and came back with a huge flurry to take the lead.  Fridley’s Justin May got a reversal with a few seconds left to tie up the score and won in OT.

Ryan Lien  at 220 was losing by 10 and came up with a  pin to put Rogers up by 6.

Going 2-0 were Phillip Anderson (two pins) at 126, Kyler Swanson (pin, major) at 145, Michael Voorhees (two pins) at 152,  Tyler Eicer (one pin) at 160,  and Gabe Martinez (two pins) at 170.

Going 1-1 were Kyle Ysteboe at 120, Beach, and Lien (one pin).

“We saw some great things out of the kids tonight,” said Donnay. “Every kid that wrestled tonight showed so much heart. We couldn’t have asked for a better start to the dual meet season.”

Rogers will  wrestle at the Maple Grove Invitational on Saturday,
