Hockey: Royal girls hand Mahtomedi first loss 3-2

The Rogers Royals, off to their best start in girls hockey, handed Mahtomedi its first loss 3-2 on Monday evening on the Zephyrs’ ice.

The Royals are 4-1-1 and Mahtomedi slipped to 5-1.

Three goals scored in just under three minutes in the second period, two of them by Rogers. Emily Antony gave the Royals a 1-0 lead at 6:51 assisted by Alicia Nelson. Aimee Krebsbach tied it at 8:12, and Madison Lehn regained the lead for Rogers at 9:43.

Lehn had an eventful second period, also incurring two penalties (high-sticking and roughing).

Nelson scored at 7:42 of the third for a 3-1 lead. Madison Bergren pulled the Zephyrs within 3-2 at 14:52 but the Royals held on.

Becca Leshovsky got the win with 18 saves. Angela Boreen had 22 saves for Mahtomedi.

Antony has 11 goals and Nelson four for the Royals, who will host Buffalo on Thursday evening.
