Hockey: Elk boys (4-0) start fast, beat Centennial 5-3
Elk River-Zimmerman boys hockey remains unbeaten after scoring two quick goals and holding on to beat Centennial 5-3 Tuesday evening in Circle Pines.
Ryan Heid put the Elks (4-0) on the board 25 seconds after the faceoff with a backhand shot, and Nick McCormack scored for a 2-0 lead before three minutes had elapsed.
Jordan Pitlick scored for the Cougars (1-2) in the second period. Elk freshman Jake Jaremko delivered a power-play goal just 1:24 later for a 3-1 lead.
Centennial’s Joe Hess made it 3-2 on a power play early in the third, touching off a flurry of goals as Andrew Zerban scored for the Elks 41 seconds later and Hans Gorowsky countered for the Cougars 1:24 after that.
Centennial, down 4-3, pulled its goalie with more than a minute left and was in the Elks zone most of the time. But the Elks and goalie Anders Franke held them off. Jared McLaughlin scored an empty-netter with one second left.
The Elks will host Blaine on Saturday at 7 p.m.
