Stout defense and free-throw accuracy carried Elk River to a 50-41 win over Buffalo in the Elks’ opener Tuesday evening in Buffalo.
The Elks permitted the Bison few good looks at the basket and shook loose a several turnovers in leading all the way, including 22-13 at the half.
At the line, the Elks made 19 of 24. Porter Morrell sank four straight down the stretch and finished 8-for-9.
Ryan Ness sank 14 points, Clay Elrod 13 and Morrell 10 to lead the Elks. Elrod had seven points and seven rebounds in the first half as the Elks took a nine-point lead.
Dominic Gilmer and Peter Cassady netted 11 points each for Buffalo (1-1), which beat Maple Grove 57-53 in its opener.
The Elks will host Centennial on Thursday evening.
