The Rogers wrestlers placed ninth among 12 teams in the Don Meyers Invitational at Fridley to open the season on Saturday.
The Royals had eight varsity wrestlers and five of them placed. Sophomores Connor Larson (120), Philip Anderson (126), and Junior Kyler Swanson (145) all took 3rd place. Senior Micael Voorhees (152), and Junior Ryan Lien (220) took 5th.
“The semifinal round was really tough on the guys but in the final round we went 5-0,” said new head coach Chris Donnay. “For the first tournament of the year we looked pretty good. We learned a lot about our team today”.
A total of 18 kids wrestled in varsity and JV including several first-timers, and almost every one won at least one match, Donnay said.
“They’ve all been working so hard in the room it was great to see their hard work pay off on the mat.”
Rogers will take on Fridley and Cooper in a tri at Fridley on Thursday.
