Basketball: Thunder girls trip SW Christian 49-38
The Zimmerman Thunder picked up their first win under new coach Lance Dalbey, 49-38 over Southwest Christian at home Friday evening.
The Thunder (1-1) started slow, trailing 20-10, but pulled within 21-10 by halftime.They took charge in the second half, showing more aggressiveness and smarter ball movement. They pulled away at the end with free throw shooting as they were in the bonus for the last 12 minutes.
Dalbey, who previously coached at Monticello, took over a team that went 2-26 last year.
Thunder scoring was remarkably balanced. Lexi Wiemerl and Melissa Dorn notched nine points each. Kaitlyn Mason added eight. Jami Schuster and Brooke Borchardt contributed seven apiece and Amber Magnuson six. Nikki Jurik added two, and Cassie Orberg one.
Christine Piwrica sank 15 points and Lauren Robertson 13 for SW Christian (1-1).
Zimmerman will open conference play at Little Falls on Tuesday evening.
