Basketball: Royal girls hold off Spring Lake Park 55-52
The Rogers Royals fended off a Spring Lake Park rally to beat the Panthers 55-52 at home Thursday evening.
Senior forward Jordyn Motter scored 18 points and senior guard Emily Reichert netted 13 for the Royals. Down the stretch, each hit two free shots after SLP had pulled within one point twice. Motter fouled out with two minutes left.
Rogers (2-0) had about 20 turnovers, many of them on bad passes, especially when Spring Lake Park used a full-court press in the second half.
The Royals led 45-37 before the Panthers (1-1) closed the gap. But the visitors were not able to take the lead.
Senior guard Nicole Howard hit 16 points, including four 3-pointers, for Spring Lake Park. Junior forward Breanna Semanko added 12.
Taylor Paulsrud added eight points, and Kelsey Frain and Courtney McClay six each, for Rogers.
While the Royals threw the ball away too often, they also scored on layups four times off well-executed passing.
The Royals opened a 29-24 halftime lead with two baskets in the last 21 seconds. Motter sank a 10-foot jump shot, then grabbed a rebound on the other end, leading to Frain’s buzzer-beating runner.
Rogers will play at Dassel-Cokato on Tuesday.
