Hockey: Royal boys trip Storm 4-2 in opener

Four different players scored for Rogers as the Royals opened with a 4-2 win over Sauk Rapids -Rice on Tuesday evening in Sauk Rapids.

Brandon Spah notched the Royals’ first goal of the season 8:10 into the game, assisted by Spencer Marchand.

Kyle Korva and Neal Smith scored in the second period, with Andrew Smith and Nate Weber assisting on the second goal. But Luke Richardson and Mitch Gwost scored for SRR as the Storm stayed close at 3-2.

The Royals outshot the Storm 16-3 in the final period although they didn’t connect until Zach Hnath succeeded with 31 seconds left for the clincher. Bryan Jungels and Marchand assisted.

The Royals had a 34-17 edge in shots with Robby Vukelich making 15 saves for Rogers and Eric Johnson 30 for the Storm.

Rogers will play at Mahtomedi on Saturday, 7:30 p.m.
