The Rogers Royals lost their opener to an Anoka team expected to be one of the state’s best, 5-1 at home Tuesday evening.

Anoka, which beat defending state champion Minnetonka 3-1 in its opener, is ranked No. 5 in Class AA.

The Tornadoes had a 5-0 lead before Rogers scored. Maddie Lehn connected on a power play for Rogers in the third period, assisted by Tory Noland.

Katie Johnson knocked in three goals for Anoka and Emilie Brigham had the other two.

“We wanted to play Anoka later in the season,” said Rogers coach Scott Childers, “and we gave them several dates, but they wanted to get us early. Last year we tied them 1-1 when we had five or six games under our belts. We knew that playing them in our opener would be a big challenge.”

Goalies were Katie McLain for Anoka and Becca Leshovsky for Rogers.

The Royals will host Simley on Saturday, 3 p.m.
