I believe the American Legion is an asset to our community. Do you realize that there are men and women who gather together every Saturday just to socialize? There are also organizations that meet weekly. On Memorial Day the Elk River German Band performs there after the Memorial Day service. Food is also available. Many people gather there to renew old friendships.
I wish to thank the faithful people who come to the Friday night dinners, to support the Legion and keep it current with their payments. We also appreciate those of you who come occasionally. I am sorry to say this, but I have never seen any council members attend these dinners. I also wish to thank those who come in for take-out dinners. The present mayor was present at most of the Friday nights when he was campaigning, and made his presence known. Now that he is mayor he has attended one.
World War II veterans are disappearing and if our volunteer veterans do not join the Legion and VFW, these will be a thing of the past. There will be no one to look after their needs as they age.
For years our former mail carrier has told me about the wonderful tacos at the Legion on Thursday nights. We had gone down on several occasions but because I’m a slow learner it was just lately I realized we could get take-outs. Tacos are available from 5–7 p.m. From now on Thursdays nights will be taco “take-out night” at our house. I just found out that soup and sandwiches are available Wednesday, 3:30–6:30 p.m.
I must also thank the Friday night volunteers. They are very friendly and enjoy serving you.
The SAL members (Sons of American Legion) are looking for more SAL members to assist. — Lola Driessen, Elk River
