Football: Elks, Royals, Thunder all seeded first in sectionals
Each of the District 728 football teams, Elk River, Rogers, and Zimmerman, has earned No. 1 seeds in their respective sectionals.
Zimmerman (7-1) will be the only one of them playing in the first round, Tuesday, hosting Melrose, as their Section 6AAA has eight teams.
Elk River (6-2), in a six-team Section 8AAAAA, and Rogers (7-1), in a seven-team Section 5AAAA, will have a first-round bye, then will play at home Saturday afternoon, Oct. 29.
The Elks are one of two 6-2 teams in their section, the other being St. Cloud Tech, but Brainerd (5-3) is No. 2. The Elks will host Duluth East or Moorhead.
Rogers, going for its third straight section title, is one of two 7-1 teams, the other being No. 2 Delano. The Royals will host Big Lake or Monticello in the semifinals.
Zimmerman’s section appears to be the most wide-open. Their No. 8 seed opponent Melrose has three wins. There are three 6-2 teams, and four from schools who’ve won state championships (Albany, Foley, St. Cloud Cathedral and New London-Spicer).
