ECFE’s 2nd annual Walk/Run deemed a success

More than 100 adults, youth and families from around the area took part in the second annual ECFE 2K walk/5K run this past Saturday at the Handke Center in Elk River.

Experienced runners as well as families with strollers took off at 10:30 a.m. through two established routes: one crossing Lake Orono and the other throughout the local neighborhood and returning to the Handke Center.

Lisa Peterson (at right) and Nichole Rydberg were among the 100-plus people who came out for a beautiful fall run that started at the Handke Family Center.

Afterwards, families enjoyed activities in ECFE’s Outdoor Nature Classroom, which included nature activities, bounce houses, face painting, pumpkin decorating, sports activities and more.

“Our goal was to encourage families to be healthy, exercise and to enjoy the outdoor Nature Classroom together as a family,” said Julia Nielsen, an assistant manager of community education.  “Our ECFE Advisory Council did an excellent job coordinating the events, volunteers and activities.”

Anytime Fitness was one of the sponsors and put together a team to walk as well as staff the event. Other sponsors included Natural Fusion, Office Max, FedEx, Kinkos, Diamond City Bread, Elk River Area Early Childhood Coalition, ECFE, Community Education and Pompeii Pizzeria.

The winners of the 5K run were Nathaniel Hackbarth, 22.14 (men) and Kyron Christopherson, 22.18 (women).
