The Elk River volleyball team opened with a big win, then a close, well-played loss, but wound up with 1-4 record Friday and Saturday at a two-day tournament hosted by St. Michael-Albertville.
Minnetonka won the 32-team tournament, beating Centennial two games to one in the finals.
Serving by Janel Finkbeiner helped the Elks beat Maple Lake, ranked No. 10 in Class 2A, in the first round 23-21, 25-22 on Friday evening. Finkbeiner served 18-for-20 with 10 aces. Jayde Krauth led with 10 kills. Finkbeiner was one of 16 players named to the all-tournament team.
The Elks gave a tall Minneapolis Southwest team a battle Friday but the Lakers prevailed 25-16, 25-27, 15-13. Krauht had 9 kills and Jordan Moening 7, while Finkbeiner and Moening each served 3 aces.
The Elks then went 0-3 on Saturday.
Delano, with tall middle and outside hitters pummeling the smallish Elks, beat them 25-12, 25-16. Moening had 3 ace serves, while Finkbeiner and Krauth were tops with 4 kills each.
STMA trimmed the Elks 25-19, 20-25, 15-8. Moening had 5 aces and 7 kills. Finkbeiner made 9 kills, Kara Ziemer 6 and Finkbeinker 5.
The Elks closed with a loss to Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 25-17, 25-16. Ziemer had 9 kills.
The Elks (11-9) will host Champlin Park on Tuesday.
