Tennis: Royals trip Irondale 5-2, now face Mounds View

The Rogers tennis team, fresh from winning the conference championship, picked up a section victory 5-2 over Irondale at home on Thursday afternoon.

The Royals (15-7) are not likely to extend their best-ever since much farther, though, facing Mounds View, the No. 2 ranked team in Class AA, in the second round there Friday at 3:30 p.m.

The clinching point had some drama as the Royals’ No. 2 doubles team, Katy Meyer and Julia Sporer, went to a third-set tie-breaker, fell behind 6-3, but rattled off five straight games to win 8-6.

Rogers was seeded No. 8 and Irondale No. 9 among 15 teams.
