Soccer: Two players’ first goals lift Elk girls over Falcons 2-1
by Bruce Strand, Sports editor
The first varsity goals by Brienna Dehkes and Monet Cairns lifted the Elk River Elks to a 2-1 win over Armstrong at home Wednesday.
It was a scoreless battle until the 58th minute when Dehkes got the Elks on the board. A junior goalkeeper who sees some action at forward, Dehkes made a follow-up shot after the Falcon goalie deflected a shot by Cairns.
“That was pretty exciting,” said Dehkes. Asked when her last goal was, she had to think. “Sixth grade, I guess. I’ve been a keeper since then.”
Cairns, an eighth-grader recently elevated to varsity, scored in the 71st minute off a crossing pass from Emily Lewis for a 2-0 lead.
Armstrong averted the shutout when Holly Enderlie scored in the 73rd minute. The Falcons had four forwards in the game and beat the Elks on the outside.
Elk goalie Kayla Zehowski faced seven shots, most of them late in the match. The Elks had 11 shots against Armstrong’s goalie Heather Kaluzniak.
The Elks are now 4-4 in conference and 5-8-1 overall. Last-place Armstrong is 1-5-2 and 1-8-3.
Next for the Elks is a game Tuesday at Centennial.
